The Excellent Lombards by Jane Hamilton

Popular Wisconsin author Jane Hamilton has written another book--The Excellent Lombards--a humorous story about family relations and growing up and featuring an endearing main character and a bittersweet ending. Set in the 1990s, main character Mary Frances Lombard (also known as Frankie or Francie) lives with her parents Jim and Nellie and her brother William in southeastern Wisconsin on their farmland.

Family unveils completed Cindy Barden Teachers’ Center

Family members of the late Cindy Barden gathered at the Fond du Lac Public Library on May 18 to view the completed Cindy Casetta Barden Teachers’ Resource Center inside the Children’s Room.

‘Go By Bike’ June 23; Bike to the Library Week June 19-25

A fun, informative session for all ages, Go By Bike at noon Thursday, June 23, at the Fond du Lac Public Library, will help celebrate Bike to the Library Week. The session, presented by Wisconsin Bike Fed, will cover bicycling laws, essential gear and how to plan safe rides.

Updated bootlegging programs June 16

Jenkins has been investigating the area’s fascinating past and will tell tales at Bootlegging and Moonshining in the Holyland presented twice – 2 p.m. and repeated at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, at the Fond du Lac Public Library.

Patriotic door rosette Crafternoon June 18

Using red, white and blue papers, crafters at the 1 p.m. June 18 Fond du Lac Public Library Crafternoon program will make a patriotic door rosette.

The program is free and open to adults and teens in middle school or older. Space is strictly limited. All supplies will be provided. Under-aged children and walk-ins are not allowed.

A new take on old classics

If you are a fan of Jane Austen's works you might enjoy these authors' modern versions of some of her greatest classics. I finished Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld this weekend and I have to say I was impressed. The story was very well written and the author has some thoughtful commentary on modern society, which I think Miss Austen would have appreciated.
