Love to laugh? Love to win prizes? It’s not too late to join Winter Reading @ FDLPL and Fond du Lac Reads for a chance to win.

Now through the end of February, the library invites the Fond du Lac community to read “The Midwest Survival Guide” by Wisconsin’s favorite comedian and author, Charlie Berens. The Fond du Lac Public Library will host a series of Midwest-themed activities for all ages as part of our annual Fond du Lac Reads program. From a book club in a bar to flannel fun to discovering stumpf fiddles, the library has something for everyone.

And because this year the library is linking Fond du Lac Reads to the annual Winter Reading Program, participants can win prizes just for participating. Log minutes read on the library’s online portal, Beanstack, as well as your participation in a series of challenges, and get entered for a grand prize that will be better than your favorite bottle of ranch dressing. In lieu of tracking progress online, patrons may use paper cards that are available at the Fond du Lac Public Library.

Activities planned for February include:

Adults:
  • Monday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in the McLane Room: Join the monthly Bad Art Night program to create with flannel. Registration required at calendar.fdlpl.org.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 12:40 p.m. at UW-Oshkosh Fond du Lac campus: The library teams up with UWO-Fond du Lac for a frank discussion about Midwest stereotypes and how Midwesterners are portrayed in popular culture. The program will be held in the UWO-Fond du Lac campus’ UC-113/114 room (LGI Room).
  • Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. at 18 Hands Ale House: The library hits the road and heads one block north to 18 E. Division St., where we will hold a Book Club in a Bar. Come prepared to discuss “The Midwest Survival Guide,” all things Midwest, and to have fun.
Youth:
  • Monday, Feb. 20 at 4:30 p.m. in the Mid-States Room: Know what a stumpf fiddle is? Learn about its Wisconsin roots while learning about this quirky instrument that can be made with everyday objects during STEAM Night. Geared toward early elementary children but all ages welcome.
  • Sunday, Feb. 26 at 12:30 p.m. in the McLane Room: See which team of four will take the top spot at our family-friendly cornhole tournament. Other games provided as well. Register at calendar.fdlpl.org; space is limited.
Teens:
  • Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 4:30 p.m. in the Mid-States Room: Drop in to Anime Afternoon to see a few episodes of anime and enjoy some snacks. Cosplay is welcome.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 4:30 p.m. in the Mid-States Room: Create a handmade scarf during Full STEAM Ahead.
  • Thursday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. in the Mid-States Room: Explore a magical day in Chicago with the notorious Ferris during “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”
