During the waning days of summer (and Summer Reading at the Fond du Lac Public Library), cool off with great events for youth and teens at the library.

Through mid-August, the Fond du Lac Public Library invites users of all ages to “Find Your Voice!,” the theme of Summer Reading @ FDLPL 2023.

All summer, the library will offer plenty to enjoy, including a special gathering at the newly renovated lighthouse at Lakeside Park. On Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 11 a.m., join friends from the library, as well as the Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts and the Friends of Lakeside Park as they reintroduce everyone to the refreshed local landmark. Drop in for a story, to learn a little history, and a fun art activity. No registration required.

Plenty of other activities are planned for younger children and their caregivers as well during August. Other activities include:

  • Thursday, Aug. 3 at 9:30 a.m. in the McLane Room, preschoolers and their caregivers may create their own cardboard cars, then watch a short movie. All supplies will be provided; no registration required.
  • Friday, Aug. 4 at 1:30 p.m., families and friends may gather to play Family Bingo in the McLane Room. Play for fun (and prizes, not money); no registration necessary.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 8 at 2 p.m.: Visit the McLane Room to try out some of the board games the library offers during Family Board Game Day. No registration required.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 4:30 p.m.: Create your own weather windsock during Crafty Kids, held in the McLane Room. Best for ages 4+; registration appreciated but not required.
  • Thursday, Aug. 10 at 9:30 a.m.: Preschoolers may drop in for an end of the summer Glow Dance Party in the McLane Room. No registration required.
  • Monday, Aug. 21 at 4:30 p.m. in the McLane Room, see if you can create the best marshmallow structure during Marshmallow Engineering. No registration needed for this monthly STEAM Night program, but registration appreciated.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 4:30 p.m., Paws to READ with a trained therapy dog in the McLane Room. These dogs are great listeners. No registration necessary.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 1:30 p.m., brush up on your fire safety knowledge with the Fond du Lac Fire & Rescue Department in the McLane Room. No registration needed.

Parents and caregivers also may drop in on Mondays at 9:30 a.m. during August for Playtime at the Library. Hang out with friends and library staff while storytime is taking a break.

Teen activities scheduled for August include:

  • Tuesday, Aug. 1 at 4:30 p.m. in the Teen Area: Drop into Anime Afternoon to see a few episodes of anime and enjoy a few snacks. Cosplay is welcome.
  • Thursdays, Aug. 10 and 24 at 2 p.m., visit the Teen Area for Game Domain: a lowkey gaming hangout. Drop in to see what’s being played each time.
  • Aug. 13-19: Register at fdlpl.org/teens for Browser’s Cache, which contains a checked-out library book to read and return, plus a snack, an activity, and a list of more book recommendations for you to keep. We'll hook you up with a cache curated just for you. Pick up your cache on the holds shelf from Aug. 20-26. August’s theme is “School Days.”
  • Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 4:30 p.m. in the McLane Room: Get creative as you receive a notebook and get ideas on how to best use it – whether as a journal, planner or sketchbook – during Full Steam Ahead. Registration opens Aug. 1.
  • Ongoing - 100 Books Before Graduation: This new, low-key reading program is geared toward busy middle school and high school students. It can be hard to find time to read for fun, but reading regularly improves cognitive skills, boosts reading comprehension, and more – so you might as well get prizes for reading. Register at the library or online, then keep track of each book you read.
