For many a fan, the taste of summer is basil. Used around the world, basil delivers a fresh, green and sunny flavor. The Fond du Lac Public Library’s monthly Flavors of the World program will focus on basil at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, in the Idea Studio. The program is free and open to adults and teens 13 and older. Registration is required and begins at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, at the Calendar.

Food blogger and adventurous home cook Kay Bastian of Fond du Lac will demonstrate recipes using fresh basil. Bastian, whose love of cooking comes straight from Mom, says her approach can be summed up in two truths: “I don't scare easily when trying new things in the kitchen, and I have a flair for pairing ingredients and switching out ingredients in recipes.”

Her blog, LoveFoodWillShare.com, features family favorites and original recipes.

Flavors of the World takes place every third Tuesday of the month in the library’s Idea Studio. Programs coming up:

  • Aug 21: MSG, presented by Jon Mark Bolthouse
  • Sep 18: Mustard, presented by Barry Levenson of The Mustard Museum
  • Oct 16: Sage, presented by Pedro Arellano
  • Nov 20: Curry powder and garam masala, presented by Varsha Pathare
  • Dec 18: Soy sauce, presented by Dusty Krikau

The Idea Studio is the library’s makerspace, a permanent do-it-yourself zone in the lower level with a demonstration kitchen, equipment to use for free and DIY programming. For more information, visit the Idea Studio page.
