FDLPL will heat up December with Winter Reading & FDL Reads programs

Put on your best flannel and say “no, yeah!” to two big programs that start in December at the Fond du Lac Public Library.

This month, the library invites the Fond du Lac community to read “The Midwest Survival Guide” by Wisconsin’s favorite comedian and author, Charlie Berens. From Dec. 1 through Feb. 28, the Fond du Lac Public Library will host a series of Midwest-themed activities for all ages as part of our annual Fond du Lac Reads program. From cheese tasting to a family tailgate to a Midwest Movie Marathon, the library has something for everyone.

And because this year the library is linking Fond du Lac Reads to the annual Winter Reading Program, participants can win prizes just for participating. Log minutes read on the library’s online portal, Beanstack, as well as your participation in a series of challenges, and get entered for a grand prize that will be better than your favorite bottle of ranch dressing. In lieu of tracking progress online, patrons may use paper cards that are available at the Fond du Lac Public Library.

Activities planned for December include:

Adults:

• Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. in the McLane Room: Join other cheese lovers for a cheese tasting experience. Learn about the cheese industry in Wisconsin, different types of cheese, and more, including cheese sampling.

Youth:

• Monday, Dec. 19 at 4:30 p.m. in the McLane Room: Drop in for our Packers Family Tailgate event during our regular STEAM Night for youth. The event will be full of sports science fun, such as playing paper football, cornhole, and more.
• Saturday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. in the McLane Room: For little ones (and perhaps their caregivers) who aren’t planning to stay up until midnight, join the Noon Year’s Eve Party. Celebrate the midwest with polka lessons, a dance party, photo opportunities and more. Ring in noon with sparkling grape juice.

Teens:

• Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 4:30 p.m. in the Mid-States: Drop into Anime Afternoon to see a few episodes of anime and enjoy a few snacks. Cosplay is welcome.
• Monday, Dec. 12 at 4:30 p.m. in the Mid-States Room: What happens when a child is forgotten at home during the holidays? Check out the shenanigans of Home Alone during the first installment of the Midwest Movie Marathon
• Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 4:30 p.m. in the Mid-States Room: Create paper snowmen (with cheese hats, of course) during Full STEAM Ahead.
• Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 2 p.m. in the Mid-States Room: Can you guess the cheese? Challenge yourself during the Blindfolded Cheese Tasting.
• Thursday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. in the McLane Room: Show off your best winter fashions (whether it’s a parka, flannel or something else) during the Winter Fashion Show. Library staff also will offer tips and tricks to stay fashionable and warm all winter long.

Additional events are planned for January and February as well.
