Listen up! (blog)
by Emilyn Linden
A very merry audiobook month to you! Audiobook month is one of my favorite reading-related celebration months because I listen to SO MANY audiobooks. They’re so convenient! I can listen in my car, while I’m gardening or taking a walk, and during so many other activities where I can’t be holding a book. We’ve got lots of great audiobooks on CD and playaway in the library, but our best selection is digital audiobooks you can check out on your phone. Take a look at the Wisconsin Digital Library for audiobooks you have available through the library.
The Witchlands Series by Susan Dennard - This young adult series is super addicting. It’s set in a world with witches who have specialized abilities - like the ability to control the wind or tell when someone is lying. These books have a number of main characters that take you all over the Witchlands as events set in motion years prior to the time of the series lead the Witchlands closer and closer to continent-spanning war.
An Immense World by Ed Yong - Yong does an amazing job of explaining and describing how other species than humans experience the world. He goes into everything from how turtles sense magnetic fields to how birds see colors our eyes aren’t equipped to register.
The Overstory by Richard Powers - I finally got around to listening to this book that came out in 2018/ I read so many rave reviews about it! The gushing was definitely spot on. The Overstory follows a handful of people over decades as they grapple with issues that are both personal and interconnected.
Nasty, Brutish and Short by Scott Hershovitz - Surprisingly, this was the best parenting book I’ve read in a long time. Scott Hershovitz is a professional philosopher and parent of two young boys. In this book he uses his interactions with his kids to show us what great philosophers young kids are when given the opportunity to voice their thoughts and opinions. He also does an amazing job of clearly explaining complex philosophical debates.
Imperial Radch series by Ann Leckie - This is another series I’ve been meaning to get to for awhile and finally downloaded them. The main character is a soldier who used to be a warship (you’ll understand when you pick it up). Breq seeks answers and vengeance after treachery stripped her of all her bodies save one.
