Long-form journalism – stories and articles found that dig deep into a topic – is thriving online. Taking advantage of these great reading opportunities, the Fond du Lac Public Library is starting Powerful Topics Reading Club, which will take place at 6 p.m. every second Monday of the month, beginning Jan. 13. The reading club is free; no registration required.

Some of the many websites that feature long-form journalism that the reading club may sample include sundaylongread.com, narratively.com, longreads.com and longform.com. But there are many more. The reading club may also discuss TED and TEDx talks.

Each month, library staff will pick an article online and suggest anyone coming to the meeting read it beforehand. The Jan. 13 article, “The Happiness Ruse” examines the current fixation on happiness. The link to the article can be found at the Powerful Topics schedule.

“We know not everyone has time for a traditional book club but might be interested in sharing ideas,” said librarian Emilyn Linden, who will be running the reading club with Information and Outreach Services Coordinator Emily Heideman. “We want to pick topics off the beaten path a bit but provide for lively discussion and – we hope – open up new pathways to learning.”
