Everyone participating in Summer Reading @ the Library must turn in their reading cards by Aug. 15 to reap their just rewards for reading. Cards can be turned in at any downtown Main Library service desk or curbside pickup. Due to the pandemic and the library’s dedication to keeping the community and staff safe, all of the library’s summer programming is virtual or outdoors.

The August program lineup for adults, families:

August Resident Michaela Null: All month long. Tune into Facebook.com/IdeastudioFDLPL to catch Idea Studio’s August virtual resident Michaela Null, former Idea Studio staffer, to explore myriad disciplines, including visual textures, repurposing materials and using unconventional applications. Null is a makerspace professional, artist and educator. She has a Ph.D. in Sociology and Women’s Studies.

Teen Photo Contest Virtual Exhibit: All month long at facebook.com/langdondivers. All 119 entries in the library’s sixth annual Teen Photo Contest will be on display on the Langdon Divers Gallery’s Facebook page. Featuring the four winners:

  • Grand prize: Kristen Heap, 14, grade 9, FDL High School
  • Anything Goes: Alix Jahnke, 12, grade 7, Faith Lutheran School (pictured)
  • Street: Briah Krueger, 13, grade 6, homeschool
  • Weather: Ayden Fowler, 15, grade 9, Horace Mann High School

Ice Cream Cone Card Take-and-Make Craft: Monday, Aug. 10, until gone. Pick up a free packet to make an Ice Cream Cone Waterfall card at home. This fun card (pictured above) flips through the scoops to reveal your personalized message. All materials and instructions included. Packet can be picked up in person or curbside starting Aug 10. One per person. Supplies limited; when they’re gone, they’re gone.

Comics Medium and “Good Talk:” 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, on Zoom. Marian University graphic arts professor Tom Wallestad will talk about the unique aspects of the comics medium, its continuing evolution and why author/illustrator Mira Jacob of Good Talk: A Memoir in Conversations might have chosen that form. For adults. Registration required at the Calendar to receive the Zoom link. Copies of the book are available to check out at the Main Library.
