2021 Idea Studio Summer Residency Program

The Fond du Lac Public Library Idea Studio’s Residency Program is open to makers, artists, musicians, technologists, artisans and inventors. The program invites an individual to create and share their work and help library patrons explore a creative pursuit through the resident’s office hours, workshops and exhibitions.

In 2021 we are interested in innovative residency proposals for using both virtual interaction tools and outdoor workshop venues. Please read the program details carefully.

Idea Studio 2021 Summer Residency Program

  • Seven weeks (July 12-August 30)
  • Applications accepted until June 11. Final selection announced by June 21.

Resident receives:

  • Access to Idea Studio during library open hours (except when studio programs are underway)
  • Limited storage for projects and materials
  • Use of Idea Studio spaces and equipment (most requires training), including noncommercial demonstration kitchen, work tables, 3-D scanner, 3-D printers, sewing machines, serger, embroidery machine, button maker, comb binder, Silhouette cutter, recording studio, Carvey CNC cutter, laser cutter, sublimation printer, heat press and printmaking press. (your proposal should not be dependent upon access to this equipment)
  • Logistical support from Idea Studio staff
  • Options to exhibit work via our online channels
  • Exhibit work in Langdon Divers Community Gallery October 2021
  • Full ownership of all work(s) created by resident during program
  • $750 stipend
  • Up to $500 reimbursed for supplies

Resident contributes:

  • 3 or more hours per week virtual “office hours:” work time when patrons can view the process and interact with a maker
    • Some portion of this time should be via video on Facebook Live. Other media/methods may be used, by mutual agreement, for the remaining hours.
  • 2 public hands-on workshops in August, to be conducted outdoors
  • Creative output (project, piece(s), etc.) available for public viewing/access (resident is also encouraged to create one item for donation to the library's displays)
  • Opportunities for the public to participate (for example, by sharing their own creations)
  • Cooperation with library/Idea Studio for marketing (interviews, photo, video, etc.)

Who is eligible:

  • Anyone over the age of 18 who is able to fulfill the requirements of contribution (above)
  • Professionals and amateurs eligible
  • Not eligible: Employees of FDLPL and members of their households, and members of the Fond du Lac Public Library Board of Directors

Selection process:

  • A jury convened by library management will choose finalists, who will be interviewed by a library panel
  • The panel will make their decisions based on proposed ideas, experience/skill, potential for patron engagement and best use of outdoor and virtual venues.
